MtG Doctor Who: Everything we know so far
Last year's exciting revelation brought the news that Magic: The Gathering is set to have a crossover with the beloved classic British sci-fi series, Doctor Who. Anticipated to feature characters and creatures from the show's illustrious 60-year history, MTG Doctor Who promises to be a treasure trove of references, catering to both classic and NuWho fans, bringing famous faces and alien races into the world of Magic cards.
This marks the second significant MTG Universes Beyond crossover release of the year, following the grand MTG Lord of the Rings set that was launched the previous season. MTG Doctor Who is expected to follow a similar approach to the MTG Warhammer 40k deck releases from the previous year, featuring Commander decks and Secret Lairs, but not accompanied by a standalone set.
Although the details are currently scarce, here's what we do know about MTG Doctor Who at this moment.

Magic: The Gathering Doctor Who Release Date
The time and space of the MTG Doctor Who decks' arrival have been revealed. The release date for MTG Doctor Who is confirmed for October 13, slightly preceding The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, the final MTG set of the year. This timing is particularly fitting, aligning with the airing of Russell T Davies' Doctor Who specials scheduled for November 2023.
Magic: The Gathering Doctor Who Decks
The MTG Doctor Who crossover is set to feature a delightful blend of reprints with a Doctor Who theme and brand new Doctor Who cards. Wizards has excitingly planned four Commander decks, filled to the brim with "doctors, companions, villains, locations, and more" from the show's rich history. Additionally, there will be collector boosters that include special treatment versions of these cards, along with the presence of MTG Secret Lairs.
During the anticipation for this release, speculations arose about the possibility of having multiple decks representing the heroes, while the notorious Doctor Who villains, known for their mischievous ways, might be bundled together in a single deck. In the past, similar crossovers like Warhammer 40k had a straightforward one-deck-per-faction approach, but Doctor Who's iconic adversaries often stand independently.
One intriguing aspect of these decks will be the introduction of a new mechanic called "Doctor's Companion." This derivative of the Partner mechanic allows players to have a second commander, provided one is a Doctor, and the other is a Doctor's Companion. For example, in the "Timey Wimey" deck, the Doctor is red/blue, while Rose is white. This should make for some intruiging combinations.
Magic: The Gathering Doctor Who Cards
We've had glimpses of several captivating Doctor Who cards, including the Tenth Doctor, who serves as the MTG commander for the "Timey Wimey" deck, accompanied by Rose.
Furthermore, we've been treated to a saga card titled "The Parting of the Ways." This is just one of the many sagas featured in the set, with each one representing an iconic episode from the show's extensive history.
Planechase is making a thrilling comeback, capturing the essence of the Doctor and companions' epic journey through time and space. Among the Planechase cards, players can explore locations like the "Tomb of the Doctor" and "Bad Wolf Bay," adding an exciting dimension to the gameplay.
Additionally, there's an enthralling cycle of MTG land cards showcasing the iconic TARDIS. Notably, a reprint of the blue-white card "Fractured Identity," featuring the fourth Doctor, has been revealed, evoking nostalgia for fans.
Excitement builds as new cards join the fray, including Davros, and captivating artwork graces cards named "Gallifrey Stands," "The Fugitive Doctor," and "The Eleventh Doctor." This abundance of time lord content is no surprise, considering the diverse array of Doctor decks in the set.
For Planechase enthusiasts, there's "The Lux Foundation Library," offering a delightful selection of experiences. Spoiled for choice this year, fans can immerse themselves in the fun and chaotic Planechase game mode, a feature also present in "March of the Machine."
