Exploring Dragon-type Cards & Dragon Energy in Pokemon TCG
Unleashing the might of mythical beasts and the power of elemental forces, Dragon-type cards and Dragon energy have been a source of awe and fascination for Pokemon TCG enthusiasts since their inception.
As one of the most iconic and sought-after elements in the Pokemon TCG universe, Dragon-type cards boast incredible strength and strategic versatility, making them a formidable addition to any deck. In this article, we delve into the captivating world of Dragon-type cards, exploring their history, unique mechanics, and their return to the forefront of the Pokemon TC.
Is there dragon energy in Pokemon TCG?
Until recently, Dragon-type cards and Dragon-type Energy hadn't been seen in Pokemon TCG since the Sun & Moon: Cosmic Eclipse expansion in 2019.
Dragon-type Energy in Pokemon TCG was a special type of energy card specifically used to power Dragon-type Pokemon's attacks. It was represented by a unique symbol on the card, distinguishing it from other types of energy, such as Fire, Water, Grass, and so on.
Dragon-type Energy cards were essential for building decks that include Dragon-type Pokemon since they provide the energy necessary to use their powerful attacks. When you played a Dragon-type Energy from your hand onto a Dragon-type Pokemon, that Pokemon could use it to pay for the energy cost of its Dragon-type attacks.
Having a separate energy type for Dragon Pokemon allowed for more strategic deck-building options and added diversity to gameplay. It also enabled the Pokemon TCG designers to create unique and potent Dragon-type Pokemon and corresponding attacks without affecting other types of Pokemon in the game.
What energy do you use for Dragon type Pokemon?
In Pokemon TCG, Dragon-type Pokemon typically required Dragon-type Energy to attack. Dragon-type Energy cards were usually represented by a special symbol and were used exclusively to power Dragon-type Pokémon's attacks.
In the past, Dragon-type Energy cards were not always available as a separate type, and Dragon-type Pokemon had different energy requirements. However, starting from the release of the Dragon Majesty expansion in 2018, Dragon-type Energy cards were officially introduced as a distinct energy type in Pokemon TCG.
Why was the Dragon-type removed from Pokemon TCG?
In the past, Dragon-type cards held immense power in Pokemon TCG, owing to their potent offensive attacks and few weaknesses. Their only limitation arose when their attacks necessitated multiple types of energy.
Until recently, since the release of Cosmic Eclipse, Dragon-type cards had been noticeably absent, leading some to believe they might have been discontinued, much like Fairy-type cards. Pokemon that were traditionally categorised as Dragon types in other games within the franchise were often printed as colourless cards instead, implying that this might become their new classification rather than having a separate Dragon type.
When did Dragon-type cards and Dragon energy return to Pokemon TCG?
In a long-awaited return, Dragon Pokemon cards made a comeback in the Pokemon Trading Card Game through the 2021 expansion sets, "Sky Stream" and "Towering Perfection." These sets marked the first appearance of Dragon-type Pokemon cards since the Sword and Shield series launch in late 2019.
Surprisingly, Creatures Inc., the creator of the Pokemon TCG, had never officially addressed the absence of Dragon-type Pokemon cards during the time they decided to phase out Fairy-type cards with the introduction of the new "Sword and Shield" sets. The sudden reappearance of Dragon types in the game after almost two years delighted fans and brought renewed excitement to the TCG community.
