Disney Lorcana: 3 new Rapunzel cards revealed
Disney Lorcana, the highly anticipated trading card game from the House of Mouse, is just around the corner. Dicebreaker has exclusively revealed three exciting character cards from the debut set, The First Chapter, ahead of Lorcana's pre-release at Gen Con in early August, followed by availability in local game stores from August 18th.
In Disney Lorcana, players engage in thrilling duels using characters from a wide array of Disney movies, ranging from the earliest appearance of Mickey Mouse in the 1928 short Steamboat Willie to recent favorites like Frozen and Moana. Unlike traditional TCGs such as Magic: The Gathering, the objective in Lorcana is to race and accumulate 20 lore points faster than your opponent. Players deploy heroes and allies to embark on quests, earning their own lore points while hindering rival characters to slow down their opponent's sprint towards victory. To play cards, players utilize ink, a resource obtained by adding cards facedown to their inkwell, which can then be used to play other cards.
While Disney Lorcana introduces unique rules different from games like Magic: The Gathering and Pokémon, it retains familiar elements. Players can construct custom decks using 60 or more cards, limited to just one or two of the game's ink types, each color-coded similar to mana colors in MTG. The cards boast various keywords that dictate their gameplay abilities and interactions with other cards and powers.
Let's take a look at the three exciting Disney Lorcana cards revealed, featuring both universal keywords and special effects for hero characters. These cards hail from Tangled, Disney's animated adaptation of Rapunzel's story in 2010.
Rapunzel, Gifted with Healing: A hero princess card requiring four Amber ink to play. Her Gleam and Glow ability allows her to remove up to three damage from a character when played, subsequently drawing a card for each damage removed. This card complements the previously revealed "Rapunzel, Letting Down Her Hair."
Flynn Rider, Charming Rogue: This hero prince card belongs to the Emerald ink set and costs two ink. Flynn's Here Comes the Smolder effect forces the opposing player to discard a card whenever Flynn is challenged.
Maximus, Palace Horse: An Amber-ink ally card costing five ink with two universal keywords: Bodyguard and Support. The Bodyguard ability forces the opponent to challenge the bodyguard card if they attack on the next turn, while Support lets Maximus add its strength value to another character during quests. Maximus had previously appeared on the "Maximus, Relentless Pursuer" card.
These latest Lorcana cards are Storyborn cards, representing characters in their original Disney movie appearances. The game also includes Dreamborn cards, offering variations on familiar characters, and Floodborn cards, presenting imaginative reimaginings, like a rock star Stitch or a giant-sized Tinkerbell.
Disney Lorcana's early pre-release will take place at Gen Con on August 2nd, followed by a full launch in local game stores on August 18th. The game will be widely available from September 1st, promising epic battles and nostalgic Disney fun for players of all ages.
